The officers at the Wayne Police Department actively pursue crime, enforce traffic laws and address quality of life issues.

City of Wayne Police DepartmentWe are committed to establishing partnerships with our citizens, businesses and schools, and to being innovative in our community policing strategies. In cooperation with the Wayne-Westland School District, we have one full time School Resource Officer (SRO) assigned to our high school. Our school resource officer provides more than just traditional policing in the school, the officer is a role model who mentors the students and challenges them to excel in their academics.

Wayne Police Department Mission Statement

Terrance Springer
Police Officer of the Year

Officer Terrance Springer has been named Police Officer of the Year, announced Jason Wright, Wayne Police Chief.

Terrance Springer Police Officer of the Year"For the past three years Officer Springer has served the community of Wayne as the Police Department's School Resources Officer assigned to Wayne Memorial High School and as a traffic patrol officer," said Chief Wright.

"Over his tour of duty," Chief Wright continued, "Officer Springer has developed an excellent relationship with the school administration and a mutually respectful relationship with students. He's the 'go to guy' for students, school administrators and for his fellow police officers."

Officer Springer joined the City of Wayne Police Department in October 2003 after graduating from the Michigan Police Academy. He is a Detroit native and a Southgate Aquinas High School graduate. He earned his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Henry Ford Community College and his BS in Criminal Justice from Madonna University.

"As a police officer I thoroughly enjoy interacting with people," explained Officer Springer. "Although many interactions aren't always pleasant – I know many people want to be heard, even to vent – still, many citizens come up to me just to say, 'Thank you for what you do'. It's an honor to see how much our community supports police officers."

"I was surprised when I was named Officer of the Year because there are a lot of great people in this department and lot of officers deserve this award," he said.

"What motivates me? Family," he said. "I had a life lesson when I was 15. I lost my mom and that was a turning point in my life. At 15 you don't appreciate things. But, as tough as it was, it grounded me for life and humbled me, too. I don't take anything for granted today. I find myself giving more than taking. I'd rather give to someone and see them happy than always receiving. What keeps me going everyday is that one experience and what I've been through since then."

Importantly for the people of Wayne, and especially the high school students, Officer Springer has been able to share those experiences.

"None of this lasts forever," he continued. "I try to tell people don't get caught up in material things. None of that leaves with you. Just try to be a good person overall. That's what people will remember about you – what type person you are."

Officer Springer and wife Mica have two boys, Terrance (3) and Trent (11 months).

Donate Your Old Cell Phone... Help U.S. Soldiers

Donate your used or broken cellular telephones and help soldiers stay in contact with their families. The Wayne Police Department is collecting used or broken cellular telephones for a non-profit organization called Cell Phones for Soldiers. "Our goal is to donate 500 cell phones by the end of September," explained Wayne Police Chief John Williams. "We have more than 350 now. Your donation will help reach our goal."Cell Phones for Soldiers

Cell Phones for Soldiers takes the donated used or broken cellular telephones and sends them to ReCellular which recycles them. ReCellular pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for the used cell telephones which then purchases pre-paid phone cards for our soldiers stationed abroad. The pre-paid phone cards provide soldiers with one hour of talk time to talk to their families.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

Drop off your used cell phones at the Wayne Police Department 24 hours a day or at any City of Wayne government building during normal business hours. For more information about the program and it’s benefits to our troops, see the web site at: www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com
