Oakwood Annapolis Hospital World-Class Healthcare, Next-Door Friendly
Often the really important things in life are not easily found no matter how far one is willing to travel. Take health care for instance. How far would you go to find the best care possible for your loved ones?
When the time comes, you will likely discover that Oakwood Annapolis’ professional medical skills are among the best in the world. Perhaps more importantly, you will also discover the comforting professionalism of Oakwood Annapolis’ nursing staff.
It’s likely you know several of the staff members, since many grew up in the area and have stayed to bring up their families, plus take advantage of the opportunities provided by the world-class Oakwood Healthcare System
There is something to be said about a major health care provider which makes it possible for a young person to enter near the bottom of the organization and work her way to the very top – eventually becoming the president and chief operating officer.
Reflecting on her start as a young RN, Cronin said, “When we started in healthcare, a hospital was the patriarchal overseer of healthcare. When you were sick you came to the hospital."
"Today," she said, "a hospital’s job is to reach out into the community.”
“Our mission is to give care, healing and health to our community and who best can do that than someone who has given care herself, not like an MBA or someone who is totally into finance. While I do have a masters degree in finance, I believe the combination helps to serve our mission. Our credo is patients come first.”
Last July, she was named President and Chief Executive Officer for the not-for-profit, 259 bed hospital, which employs 1,100 people and serves Wayne, Westland, Garden City, Canton, Hollister and Inkster.
“Oakwood Annapolis Hospital is a community hospital. We are like a family. We live, work and marry here,” she said.
“We are a full-service hospital, with an outstanding practice in women’s health. We have a brand new OB unit with 11 LDRP beds, three triage beds, two antepartum beds and two ORs. We operate a Breast Care Center with digital diagnostic testing, bone density testing. Additionally, we operate the only Open MRI in western Wayne County, a state-of-the-art system costing $4 million.
“All together, Oakwood Healthcare System has invested more than $35 million into the Annapolis facilities over the past few years.”
Refecting on her start as a young RN, Cronin said, “When we started in healthcare, a hospital was the patriarchal overseer of healthcare. When you were sick you came to the hospital."

“At Oakwood Annapolis, we are partnering with businesses and government. For example we recently bought two EKG machines for the Fire Department in Wayne. The City bought three and we bought two, in order to be able to diagnose heart attacks sooner and achieve better patient outcome. We are also purchasing the same equipment in cooperation with the City of Westland. We will soon do the same with Inkster, Canton and Garden City.”
One thing is for sure, we can count ourselves lucky to live in Wayne — not only because the drive is reasonable, but because Wayne is a “full-service” community, with everything close by and world-class quality, too.
