“Boundless” Wayne

John J. Zech, City ManagerWayne community volunteers and the Wayne Parks and Recreation Department have just built a new park. Their labors are the capstone to more than two years of planning and fundraising efforts in which they secured $370,000 in funding from a variety of sources, including: the Wayne Rotary Club, Wayne County Commission, the federal Land and Water Soroptimist Boundless ParkConservation Fund, the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan, and CVS Caremark Corporation.

The park’s significance is not so much that an exciting, beautiful play structure was erected by dedicated volunteers, although the fact that Wayne people have traditionally pulled together to make projects of all types to come to life, rather, it’s what the Play 4 All Boundless Playground at Soroptimist Park means for special education kids, their guardians, other “normal” children and their parents, as well as what it says about our City and who we are.

Boundless FacilitiesThe park is one of but a handful of outstanding new concept facilities in the U.S. Kimberly J. Alexander, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, played a major role in making this dream come true. She explained the project in these words, “This playground will be filled with activities to interest and delight any child and will surpass Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility guidelines. This means that all children regardless of ability, will be able to do more than simply access a playground… they will be able to interact with one another… and play side-by-side with their peers.”

In a larger sense, the City of Wayne is a place of interaction and Boundless Opportunities. It's where we live, play and work together, side-by-side, taking advantage of the opportunities which our ancestors labored to bring to life for themselves and their children. And, as our parent’s children, it’s now our turn to create new opportunities, adding to the bounty we’ve enjoyed through our lives.

Today, through the new Soroptimist Park, we’ve extended “opportunity” without limits to a group of people who were previously denied a fair shot at life’s bounty. That says a lot of good things about the people who call Wayne their home.

Sincerely,
John J. Zech,
City Manager
