Many Accomplishments for Wayne in 2008
With 2009 now underway, we want to report on the numerous projects that were accomplished in 2008.
- Phase 8 of the Watermain and Sanitary Sewer Replacement Program.
- Whitney Knoll Subdivision Road Grading and Reditching Project.
- John Hix Road Repaving Project from Glenwood Road to Michigan Avenue.
- Glenwood Heights Subdivision Intersection Improvement Project.

• Newburgh Road and Hillcrest Drive
- Niagara Street Paving Project from Michigan Avenue to the Norfolk
and Southern Railroad Right-of-Way.
- Elizabeth Street Paving Project just south of Michigan Avenue West.
- Pershing Street Paving Project from Michigan Avenue East to Michigan Avenue West.
- Banner Arms and Banners were installed on the decorative streetlights on Michigan Avenue West from Elizabeth Street to the CSX Railroad Viaduct.
- The City-Owned Parking Lot behind Leo's Jewelry and Gifts, the Chamber of Commerce Office, Jake's Bar, etc., was repaired, sealcoated and restriped.
- The Play 4 All Boundless Playground at Soroptomist Park was constructed and dedicated.

- The Recreation & Exercise Club (R.E.C.) at the Community Center was renovated and reopened. It is to be dedicated in honor of former Mayor Patrick J. Norton on December 5, 2008.
- A new sign at the Community Center was constructed.
- A new water main was installed along the east side of Wayne Road from Ash Street to Sims Avenue.
- The new 134ff. aerial ladder truck was received.
- The 911 System was upgraded.
- The assets of the City's Pension System for the current full time employees were transferred to the Municipal Employees Retirement System (MERS).
- Upon the favorable vote of the people, the assets of the City's Pension System for the retired full time employees were transferred to MERS.
- A Master Plan for Dynamite Park was approved.

- A new picnic pavilion was constructed in Angelo DeMano Park.
- New emergency exit doors were installed in the Ice Arena.
- New automatic entrance and exit doors were installed in the Ice Arena.
- The former Wayne Theater was razed.
- A new 30 year contract with the City of Detroit Water Department was approved.
- A new ordinance to regulate private fire hydrants was approved.
- The Veterans Peace Memorial Fountain was repaired.
- The City Clerk's Office conducted four elections.

- The Wayne History Mural was completed and dedicated.
- 3030 South Wayne Road was sold and the Youth Services Division was relocated to the Community Center.
- 3347 Williams Street was purchased and sold after repairing the storm sewer beneath it.
- 4332 Hayes Street was purchased from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and sold.
- 4113 Hubbard Street was purchased from HUD.
- The process of updating the Master Plan for the downtown area was begun.
- Three 12-Lead EKG Monitors were purchased.
- Four emergency warning sirens were purchased with installation to take place by the end of the year. This increases the City's Emergency Warning System to seven sirens.
- Three ALS Certified Firefighters were hired to increase each unit to six (one Captain, one Lieutenant and four Firefighters).
- An additional Lieutenants position was created to assist the Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Marshal with inspections and the Fire Chief with the Emergency Management Program.
- The carpeting in the Circulation Area, the Multi Purpose Room and the Children's Area was replaced.
- New Collective Bargaining Agreements were negotiated with the following groups:
• Police Command Officers
• Police Officers
• Public Works & Recreation Employees
• Emergency Services Dispatchers
• Supervisors
• General Employees Association
• 29th District Court Employees
- A new website was launched.
- A cooperative for purchasing insurance benefits was developed and approved by the Conference of Western Wayne (CWW) and the Downriver Community Conference (DCC). Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Authority has now joined the group.
- Howe Road was resurfaced from Van Born Road to Michigan Avenue.
- A new pumper is to be delivered by the end of the year.
- The new Live Scan/Identix Finger Printing System is to be installed by the end of the year.
- The Goudy Park Amphitheater Dome was replaced.
- The 2007 Michigan Avenue West Repaving Project Punch List was finalized.
- New "turn-out" gear was purchased for each member of the Fire Department.
- Another Citizens Police Academy was conducted.
- The renovations to the Historical Museum were completed.
- The main room of the Senior Activity Center was dedicated in honor of Robert Smith.
- Planning for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Wayne becoming a City was begun.
These accomplishments were done through a combination of General Fund monies, bond funds, federal, state, county and agency grants, private contributions, DDA funds, Special Assessment District funds and Major Streets Funds.
