Some Interesting Facts About the City of Wayne:

In 1824, George Johnson purchased 80 acres of land for $100 and built a log tavern on the south branch of the Rouge River and the historical process was set in motion.  By the 1830's, Ezra Derby had bought the tavern and surrounding land.  Derby built a sawmill to support housing and soon afterward added a general store and blacksmith shop.

In a few short years, the original plat, with 169 lots, streets and a "public square" called Wayne was recorded with the county on July 25, 1836.  It is generally agreed that the city was named after General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne.

General Wayne distinguished himself against the British in the battles of Monmouth, Stony Point and Yorktown. At the battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, Major General Wayne, commanding the western army, defeated a Native American coalition near Toledo, Ohio. One year later, he concluded a treaty with them which is credited with opening up the Northwest Territory to settlers.

For more than 150 years, the history of Wayne has mirrored the history of transportation, from the stagecoach to automobile.   The Prouty & Glass Carriage Company was one of the first companies in Wayne. Prouty & Glass grew into one of the largest manufacturers of sleighs and carriages in the United States.

Wayne's connection to putting people in motion continued with Harroun Motors, the Gotfredson Truck Corporation, Graham-Paige Motors, the Gar Wood Company and the Ford Motor Company.

Today, more than 11,000 people come to Wayne every day to earn their living.
